Build a practical vertical TikTok layout, distinguish organic posting from ad specifications, and calculate a crop before a face or product disappears.
Use a vertical working canvas and identify the upload route
A 1080 × 1920 canvas is our practical 9:16 editing preset for a vertical social video. It gives you a concrete layout to design against; it is not presented here as the only accepted TikTok size. Record whether you will upload organically in the app, use a scheduler or run an ad. Those routes must not share one assumed specification sheet.
TikTok’s official auction in-feed ad guide recommends 9:16 vertical video and documents a minimum of 540 × 960 pixels for that ad format. That is ad guidance, not a verified universal organic-upload rule. Exact organic duration and file limits were not established in this research.
- 1Route
Identify organic or ad upload.
- 2Canvas
Choose a vertical layout.
- 3Action
Preserve movement at the edges.
- 4Preview
Inspect file and composer.
Choose crop, fit or a new recording deliberately
An editor’s fill option enlarges the source until it covers the canvas, then removes the excess. Fit preserves the complete source, leaving spare space where proportions differ. Adobe Express and Canva document resizing workflows; check the actual export dimensions on your account rather than assuming a preset guarantees correct framing.
Crop when the subject and action remain clear throughout the shot. Fit when a demonstration needs both ends of a product or an on-screen comparison. Record vertically when the horizontal source cannot preserve the important detail without making it tiny. Stretching the source changes shapes and should not be the default repair.

Worked example: a square source becomes a narrow center strip
Completed arithmetic exercise using a fictional 1080 × 1080 product clip. Filling a 1080 × 1920 canvas scales the source by 1920 ÷ 1080, or about 1.778. Only 607.5 pixels of the original source width remain visible. The center crop runs approximately from x=236 to x=844. A hand entering at x=900 is cut off even though the product stays centered.
Corrected layout: fit the square at 1080 × 1080, leaving 840 vertical pixels in total, or 420 above and below if centered. Put a short explanation in the upper space and leave the lower space visually quiet. This specification preserves the hand and product; it does not claim a TikTok upload or vendor-render test.
Fictional 1080 × 1080 clip; a hand enters at x=900.
Fill keeps source x≈236–844; hand disappears.
Fit square source; leave 420 pixels above and below.
Design the message around the preview, not a guessed safe zone
Keep critical words and demonstrations away from the extreme edges. Interface controls and caption length can cover different portions of the video. We do not invent fixed pixel margins for every device or placement. Check the live composer preview for your upload route and inspect the view with the actual caption.
For ads, follow the relevant TikTok placement documentation and preview rather than copying an organic screenshot. For generated backgrounds, verify that the product has not changed and the text remains legible. The caption should help explain what appears on screen; it cannot rescue a crop that removes the action.
Verify the file before blaming the platform
Open the local export, inspect dimensions and orientation, and play through movement at normal speed. Check caption timing, the first frame and any accidental blank tail. Preserve a clean source so you can change the layout without recompressing an already compressed copy.
TikTok’s ad guide lists MP4 and MOV for the referenced ad format. Do not turn that into a claim about every organic workflow. Confirm current requirements for the route you actually use. Correct framing makes the video easier to understand; it does not prove greater reach or viewer retention.
TikTok framing questions
Are ad dimensions the organic upload rules?
No. This guide explicitly separates the documented ad format from unverified organic limits.
Is a square source unusable?
No. Fit can preserve it inside a vertical canvas with a designed background.
Have these TikTok layouts been uploaded?
No. The completed example is a fictional crop calculation and corrected layout specification.

Your decision criteria: Portrait orientation, preserved movement and readable overlays.
Before you choose
- Try a small, realistic task: fictional 1080 × 1080 clip; a hand enters at x=900..
- Check the result against what matters here: portrait orientation, preserved movement and readable overlays.
- Make sure you can edit and export the finished work in the format you need.
- Count the retries and corrections, then check the full cost of the plan you would use.
