Use 1080 × 1920 as a practical vertical preset. Choose fit or fill deliberately, then check the actual export and platform preview.
Instagram Reel size: start with a vertical 1080 × 1920 canvas
For a full-screen vertical Reel, use a 1080-pixel-wide by 1920-pixel-high editing canvas: a 9:16 aspect ratio. Adobe’s Instagram sizing guide recommends that full-screen format. This is our practical starting preset, not a claim that every other upload size is rejected. Width comes first: 1920 × 1080 is a landscape frame, even though it contains the same number of pixels.
Three decisions are separate: the canvas dimensions, the way your source footage fits inside it, and where text sits. Getting the first right does not automatically fix the other two. A sharp landscape recording can still lose its subject in a vertical crop; a correctly sized vertical export can still place subtitles behind interface controls. Set the canvas before adding captions, logos or product labels.

Choose an editing workflow by the correction you need
Use a simple resize workflow when your clip already contains a centered subject and needs a new canvas. Adobe Express documents a video resizer with platform presets and a custom-size option. Canva documents video resizing and Instagram format choices. These documented capabilities make them candidates for changing layouts; they are not evidence that either tool automatically finds the right crop in every shot.
Choose a timeline editor with shot-by-shot framing controls when people move, the product sits near an edge, or captions need timing changes. Avoid a one-click crop if it repeatedly cuts off the thing the viewer needs to see. Before subscribing, try your required dimensions and export on your actual account. Recurring pricing, premium resize access, export restrictions and scheduling permissions were not independently established for this guide. A manual export is a separate workflow from publishing through an integration.

Worked example: why a landscape crop loses most of the shot
We completed this arithmetic and layout exercise using a fictional bakery clip, not a vendor application. The source is 1920 × 1080, with a cake centered in the frame and its price card near the left edge. The initial instruction was “fill the vertical frame.” To fill a 1080 × 1920 destination, the landscape source must be enlarged by 1920 ÷ 1080, approximately 1.778. Its resulting width is about 3413 pixels, but only 1080 pixels remain visible.
In source coordinates, the visible center strip is just 607.5 pixels wide: 1080 ÷ 1.778. That retains about 31.6% of the source width, leaving roughly 68.4% outside the crop. A price card at x=300 is outside the retained strip, which runs from approximately x=656 to x=1264. The correction is to preserve the entire source inside the vertical canvas and use the remaining space for a separate, editable title and price. This final layout specification preserves the card without stretching the cake. No video export or Instagram upload was performed.
Fictional 1920 × 1080 bakery clip; price card at x=300.
Fill crop keeps only about 607.5 source pixels across; the price card disappears.
Fit the whole shot; use the spare vertical space for editable supporting text.
Decide between filling the frame and preserving the whole shot
Fill crops the source until the destination has no empty area. Fit preserves the whole source and leaves space when the aspect ratios differ. In our example, fitting the 1920 × 1080 clip to a width of 1080 makes the video 607.5 pixels tall. Centered inside a 1920-pixel-high canvas, it leaves about 656 pixels above and below. That is a layout choice, not a defect you must hide.
Use the spare area for an intentional background and concise supporting text, or capture a new vertical shot if the subject needs to dominate the screen. Reframe individual shots when the subject moves rather than applying one center crop to the entire sequence. AI-assisted reframing can propose a starting composition; inspect the first, middle and last frame of each moving shot. Do not invent missing product edges or change a product’s shape simply to fill the canvas.
Keep captions and covers readable in the actual preview
Keep the essential message away from the extreme edges and leave room around captions. We do not provide a universal pixel-perfect safe-zone template: interface controls, caption expansion and viewing surfaces can change. The original diagram in this guide shows a layout principle, not a measured Instagram overlay. Review the current composer preview before publishing, including any cover crop offered for your account.
Make the cover’s main subject and short headline work when less of the frame is visible. A cover is a discovery image; the video is a timed sequence. Treat them as two compositions. If a preview clips the headline, reposition it rather than shrinking every word until it becomes unreadable. Inspect subtitles over both bright and dark footage, keep their timing matched to the speech, and correct names, prices and units manually.
Check the exported file before diagnosing an upload problem
Open the downloaded file outside your editor. Confirm portrait orientation and actual 1080 × 1920 dimensions, then inspect the crop, text, audio and first and last frames. Keep your source and editable project so a correction does not require rebuilding the sequence. Record the export preset and the publishing route used: app upload and a third-party scheduler can have different constraints.
If the local file already looks blurry or stretched, fix that export first. If it looks correct locally but different in the platform preview, investigate the upload route and the current account requirements. Repeatedly exporting a previously compressed file can compound quality loss. Keep a clean master. Instagram’s official specification page could not be retrieved during this research, so exact current minimum frame rate, file-size and duration limits remain unconfirmed here; check them before publishing. Correct dimensions improve presentation, but do not establish greater reach or engagement.
Social video layouts questions
Is 1920 × 1080 the same as 1080 × 1920?
No. The first is landscape; the second is portrait. Both contain the same pixel count, but the composition is different.
Should I stretch a landscape clip to fill a Reel?
Stretching distorts shapes. Choose a crop, fit the entire shot with a designed background, or record a new vertical clip.
Does the right Reel size guarantee better reach?
No. Dimensions solve a presentation requirement. They do not prove audience interest, retention or distribution.
Are the crop calculations an Instagram upload test?
No. We performed arithmetic using fictional dimensions and produced a corrected layout specification. Vendor exports and platform uploads were not tested.

Your decision criteria: Portrait dimensions, preserved subjects, readable captions and clean exports.
Before you choose
- Try a small, realistic task: one landscape clip with an important detail near its edge; compare fit and fill.
- Check the result against what matters here: portrait dimensions, preserved subjects, readable captions and clean exports.
- Make sure you can edit and export the finished work in the format you need.
- Count the retries and corrections, then check the full cost of the plan you would use.
