How to choose
Claude Code and Cursor approach AI coding from different ends. Claude Code is Anthropic's agentic coding tool, run from the terminal and connected to other developer tools through MCP. Cursor is a full AI code editor with an Agent mode, plus documented MCP and CLI support. Pricing differs as well. Cursor has a free Hobby tier with limited Agent requests, then Pro at $20 per month and Teams Standard at $40 per user per month. Claude Code has no free plan: it is included with paid Claude plans, starting with Pro at $20 per month ($17 billed annually), with Max at $100 or $200 per month for more usage, or it can be billed per token through a Claude Console account. Claude Code usage draws on the same limits as Claude chat on that plan.
- Claude Code: You prefer working in the terminal and already pay for Claude Pro or Max, or want usage billed per token through the API.
- Cursor: You want an AI code editor you can try on a free tier first, or per-user team pricing at $40 a month.
- Either: You are an individual developer happy at $20 a month; both start there for one person.
